Some Pro Wrestling History In Colombia


This blogger is definitely not an authority regarding pro wrestling in Colombia, the wrestlers, promotions or a great knowledge of its history.  However, this fan will try and come up with what some tidbits.  If anyone has any more information on what was mentioned above, please message and / or e-mail me.  The information will be added here.  This blog is definitely an informational one to anyone worldwide!


According to Google, pro wrestling in Colombia apparently began with American sailors helping to begin a wrestling club in 1936 at Barranquilla.  The sport would eventually spread to other cities in the country including Bogata.


About 30 years later, in 1967, the Federacion Colombiana de lucha Olimpica was formed (also known as the National Wrestling Federation.


Regarding wrestling development, the Antioquia region is credited for developing the wrestling both in Greco Roman and Freestyle for the country's national team members.

Benny Ramirez - Benny is a Colombian professional wrestler who won the Texas NWA Heavyweight Championship in 1962.  He competed internationally.


El Jaguar de Colombia - He held the World Light Heavyweight Championship in Bogata in 1973.  El Jaguar also challenged for the WWF Tag Team Championship.


Red Velvet - A Colombian-American wrestler and dancer.


Colombia pro wrestling is on the rise after years of setbacks due to financial reasons.  SAW-WAG mentioned in a previous post is one that is definitely on the rise in South America.
